Intro:Adventurous travel and global connectivity unlock creative and cultural potential for textiles inspiration, with destinations such as Cuba and the Caribbean providing a wealth of ideas. Regional crafts such as tie-dye, batik and basket-making inspire new textures, and colour is inspired by sun-drenched landscapes and indigenous flora and fauna – the perfect backdrop for exotic holiday-wear fabrics.
Key Points
- The merging of diverse cultures creates an eclectic mix of unique identities and styles. Encounter Culture is an adaptable high-summer beach-to bar direction. Fluid, sometimes sheer fabrics are combined with more structured casual weaves, as well as decorative statement prints and patterned poolside cover-ups, blurring the boundaries between day to night.
- Yarns are mainly natural or vegetal, with cotton being the main fibre, followed by linen and silk. Slippery, silky types in rayon and polyester offer a supple drape. Irregular micro texture defines sandy crepes, flamed or bouclette yarns, as well as fine paper-touch raffia tape or ribbon yarns. Space-printed yarns add a grainy look or sun-drenched ombré colour.
- Weaves take inspiration from natural construction, connecting in with global craft. Dimensional structures are reminiscent of raw textures found in exotic vegetation, and basketry is referenced for smart and casual fabrics. Traditional shibori and batik hand-dye techniques influence exotic tie-dye and printed effects. Extra-weft patterns, jacquards and dobby stripes explore a global pattern mix for denim, dress-weights and shirting.
Although this trend does not completely relate, I believe there are many aspects of the trend that have similarities, for example The merging of diverse cultures creates an eclectic mix of unique identities and styles. as well as the smart exotic element of the trend I feel this is something I am trying to portray within my collection.
What is the KINSHIP trend is about?
Kinship is a trend with a global outlook, inspired by a blend of cultures. Traditional patterns from carpets, tapestries and global textiles are fused together and reinvented with a graphic hand. Thousands of years of trading cultural riches culminates in vibrant and diverse decorative pattern that makes a bold statement for festival season.
Inspiration can be taken from the explorative spirit of ancient trade routes by fusing a multitude of patterns in one design, transporting traditional patterns into the new world. Renew these time-honoured motifs with a stylised hand, and intensify prints with a bold key line and decorative dotting. For further impact, heighten with contrasting heady colours.
I feel this trend is a lot more in tune with my collection and the trend has a lot of elements that marry well with my research for example, a trend with a global outlook, inspired by a blend of cultures. Traditional patterns from carpets, tapestries and global textiles are fused together and reinvented with a graphic hand. I feel this is something I have tried and continue trying to do throughout my research and design work, by taking elements of moroccan patterns and fusing them with European fashion.
